Hypnotherapy

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis.  I use Solution Focused Hypnotherapy which is a powerful modern version of hypnotherapy backed up by science and research which allows us to help bring about significant change by focusing on your desired future without the need to analyse past or present problems.

I offer a free initial consultation so that we can dicuss your situation and how Solution Focused Hypnotherapy might be able to work for you.  You can then decide if it is the right therapy for you.

Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand to solve all problems instantly and there are no guarentees.  All therapy is a co-operative interaction between the therapist and client. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy works quickly and effectively when it is approached with commitment to making changes.

Change and transformation do not have to be traumatic, but can occur gently and joyfully.

What hypnosis isn’t...

Contrary to the image portrayed in films, books and the media, hypnosis doesn’t involve the therapist taking control of your mind! No one can hypnotise you against your will. Nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to – your sub-conscious will simply reject any suggestion that is inappropriate for you.Double click to insert body text here ...

Q. I don't know if I can be hypnotised?

Everybody can go into a light trance, even if we don't think we can. It's a natural human behaviour for us, and surprisingly, we all do it every day. When we are drifting to sleep, or when we day dream and 'drift off' for a few minutes.  Don't worry about whether you are 'going deep' enough, all that's needed is to relax, and the guided visualisation helps you with that.

Q. How many sessions will I need?

Solution focused hypnotherapy is a 'brief' therapy so results are quicker than other therapies but there are no hard and fast rules as each case is different. It's important for results to be long lasting, and this happens with best effect on weekly sessions where we can gain some momentum and we track progress each week. Following that we can then arrange longer gaps between sessions to ensure that your treatment is continuing to be effective longer term.

Q. What happens at the initial consultation?

The initial consultation gives us the opportunity to meet for the first time and typically takes around an hour. We talk about your goals, and what you would like to achieve. I'll also ask a number of questions to guide you through. I'll explain how the brain works in straight-forward terms in relation to our work. This makes most people feel reassured of how they can regain control and get back to their real selves in a short period of time. I'll explain what typically happens during sessions and it gives you the opportunity to ask any questions before your first session. I'll also gift you with a relaxation CD to take home.

Q. Is it like stage hypnosis?

No. Clinical hypnotherapy is a professional therapy unlike TV or stage entertainment. You will be in control the whole time and you will be fully aware of everything going on. Hypnotherapy is a safe, calming, and relaxing experience. Once you trust that your therapist is a friendly experienced professional with only your best interests at heart, most people are able to relax, take some time out, and enjoy the process and the results.

where your sub conscious mind is more open to suggestions that you want for yourself.  Your subconscious mind can will only accept suggestions that you want for yourself

What happens during a hypnotherapy session?

During your hypnotherapy sessions, we won't talk about any problems or things that have happened in the past, but instead we focus on the future and how you want your life to be.  We then use a state of deep relaxation to make those suggestions to your subconscious mind. In a theraputic setting, the suggestions are designed to be the most helpful for you to achieve the changes you want for yourself.  You will receive an CD/MP3 to listen to each night to continue and reinforce the changes in between sessions.

What does hypnosis feel like?

You will have already experienced a hypnotic state, in fact, you probably do a few times every day.  If you have ever driven home and not remembered the journey, or been engrossed in a book or film and not been consciously aware of time passing, then you have been in trance similar to a hypnotic state.  Even day dreaming is a type of trance state.

Many clients say how relaxing and normal hypnosis feels.  If you need to awaken or want to stop at any point, you have complete control and can open your eyes, similar to snapping out of a day dream.

Is it like stage hypnosis?

Not at all.  Like a lot of acts, stage 'hypnosis' involves sleight of hand, showmanship and deception for the purposes of entertainment.  Hypnotherapy is a comfortable, relaxing experience  where we can hear everything and are in complete control of everything we say and do.

How many sessions would I need?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy and so tends to work faster than other therapies, but there are no definite rules about how many sessions you may need as everyone is different.  As a guide, phobias are usually released in 3 sessions and smoking cessation in one 2hr session.  Other anxiety conditions usually require 3-6 weekly sessions to gain momentum before leaving increasingly longer gaps between sessions until you decide that you have reached your goal.  It can be comforting to know that you are not obligated to continue sessions unless you want to.

'Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for hypnotherapy than any other complementary therapy... by using hypnosis, people can perform prodigious feats of willpower and self healing'              Health Education Authority

Can anyone be hypnotised?

Yes as long as they want to and have the ability to concentrate.  Hypnosis is not suitable for very young children or people with certain mental disabilities.
